Heather's Story with Endometriosis

Heather Hogg wrote the following about her experience with Endometriosis.

My experience with Endometriosis is a journey that began when I was 18. I remember being in excruciating pain and heavily menstruating every day. I felt like I was dying; I had no idea why it was happening to me or why my body hurt so much. Luckily, I met my OBGYN from heaven, Dr. Heather Bellanger, and she explained to me I was not dying and that there are possibilities for alleviation. One possibility for temporary relief from my disease was to get a laparoscopy. Looking back 6 years to when I had my laparoscopic surgery at 20 years old, I was so scared and so hopeful this would be the cure I had been searching for – needless to say, my search continues.

Treatment options are like a game of trial and error, where there is no guarantee for complete satisfaction. Sometimes it feels like I’m choosing the lesser of two evils. My choice to have surgery made my disease more manageable, but every day is still a battle for me. Although not as debilitating as before, the pain on some days can be off the 1 – 10 pain scale. Besides surgery, I’ve tried Lupron, various dosages of birth control, and Orilissa. The latter is my current aid. There is still a lot that is unknown about endometriosis, but that gives hope for the discoverability of better treatment options. I have faith that being in uncomfortable situations or circumstances is often a prerequisite for stepping into greatness. I’m thankful for my blessings, the support of my family and friends, and my community of Endowarriors. What doesn’t break me, makes me stronger.
